Artist Website"My paintings address issues in the most direct way possible. The event that made this happen was the questioning of a progressivism in art. Basically, I'm interested in artifice. Artifice comes close to describing those social, aesthetic and human forces that constitute a culture (including its various aspects of reification and usage). Rather than universalized statements, I'm interested in the internalization of socio/cultural elements and their manifestation in individual entities. To me, the internalized landscape with figurative punctuation holds that potential. The figures represent beings in an ambiguous relation to our dominant culture. They are an investigation of the status of being Asian in America. Signifying a minority, they function in a subversive capacity, similarly to the notion of artifice in relation to a cultural mainstream." --Charles Yuen, Artist Statement
