By clicking each link in the search submenu (e.g. Material Index, Style/Period Index, Subject Index, Technique Index), you can browse terms in each category. Clicking a term will return results with all artwork/documents that have the selected category term (e.g. Clicking "September 11" in the Subject Index pulls out all artwork/documents that have the "September 11" as a Subject.)
Search will find results that contain ANY of the search terms. (i.e. Entering 'identity' and 'stereotypes' will return results that contain 'identity' OR 'stereotypes'.) Results that contain 'identity' AND 'stereotypes' will show up first in the search results.
Wrap words with quotation marks (e.g. "concentration camps") to search for the exact phrase. Exact phrases may be combined with other words and other exact phrases. (e.g. searching '"concentration camps" world war' will return results containing "concentration camp", "world", OR "war".)
Click "Show Advanced Options" to see all tables for category terms. For example, enter the keyword 'portraits' as a serach term, and click 'Chinatown' in the Subject table, and 'Photography' in the Techniques table, then press the "Search" button. Search results will only display records that contain the word 'portraits', have 'Chinatown' as a subject, AND have 'Photography' as technique.
To select multiple terms from the tables:
Multiple terms will be combined based on the radio buttons beneath the select boxes; e.g., selecting 'airplanes' and 'apartments' in the Subject table and clicking the 'Any Subjects' button will search for artworks and documents that have the Subject 'airplanes' OR the Subject 'apartments', clicking the 'All Subjects' button will search for artwork and documents that have the Subject 'airplanes' AND the subject 'apartments'.
