"Harmony, as based on the principle of opposites, a fundamental tenet of traditional Chinese art, is of equal concern to Gu. This notion of contrast, the immediate result of juxtaposing the functional and the non-functional, parallels the concept in Chinese cosmology of the yin and yang, or the notion of eternally interacting forces. This concept is echoed in the artist's choice and application of color. Red, black, and white comprise Gu's signature palette. "I am a game player among red, black and white," he has said. (Notes on the installation, April 26, 1990; enclosed in a letter of Wenda Gu to Diana C. du Pont, New York, May 2, 1990." -- From exhibition brochure of University Art Museum, August 31 - December 2, 1990.
